By LeShon Archer
Marriage is a wonderful institution, created by and a gift from God. With its many joys and blessings, marriage also has its share of struggles, strain, and unwanted surprises. For the Christian wife in particular, what do you do when the unexpected occurs within your marriage? Betrayal, infidelity, sickness, addiction, infertility, financial pressures, lack of communication; these are among the many unpleasant, undesirable, and unwelcome “surprises” many wives face. And we’re struggling.
Personally, the unexpected occurred in my marriage in the summer of 2017, when a piece of mail arrived at my home-ultimately revealing my husband’s financial infidelity. Following are a few practical recommendations:
- Pray (Philippians 4:6-7). Pray for yourself. Pray for (not about) your spouse. Pray for God’s direction, intervention, and revelation. Ask God to provide a trusted mentor or friend to pray with and for you.
- Meditate on and Memorize Scripture (Psalm 119:11) God is the Promise Keeper. Seek Scriptures that affirm His promises, His power, and His presence. Memorize and post Scripture somewhere you will see it often.
- Choose to forgive (Matthew 6:14-15; Colossians 3:13).
- Seek and Utilize Christian Tools & Resources. Read books pertinent to your situation, as well as devotionals and newsletters. Listen to podcasts and sermons online. Attend a conference. Seek Christian counseling. Choose to saturate your mind and heart with godly messaging.
